The beginnings of The Illuminati are from the 18th century when a German philosopher created an order to rid monarchies and state supported religions. Originally, this was a secret society much like the Free Masons that were widely noticed. From the popular series, written by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson, the conspiracy was given the appearance of a cult dedicated to controlling the affairs of the world by manipulating governments and corporations to create a New World Order.
