Philosophy is a topic that is only wanted for its originality. All philosophers must write about something different and still sound relevant to the world. Even knowing this, there is always people out there wishing to rephrase what others have said and clarify extremely specific points. The problem with philosophy is that it is so hard to find something new to talk about. On top of that, if the point your trying to make is not well written or relevant to any philosophical arguments, your part of the discussion is useless.
The goal of all philosophers is to write on a topic that is very controversial and explain your standing on it. Each philosopher wants to be remembered as the man or woman who changed your thoughts for years to come. The longer your remembered, the more important you are. Socrates is known throughout the world through his disciple, Plato, and later Plato's disciple, Aristotle. His words are easily recognized for the depth that he reaches and his understanding of the world. His words, "I only know that I know nothing," are whispered even today and thought of as the deep and intelligent words of a master philosopher. All philosophers have the inspiration, but only a few can touch the popularity of Socrates, and those who do are still in the shadow of his figure.
What isn't fair is that the longer that Philosophy has been around, there is less that you can think of that has not already been said. Those who wrote down the very first deep and serious thoughts were virtually unlimited in the creativity that they could express. Today you really have dig to find a new topic. Those who are smart enough and have the creativity to match it are who are remembered in any profession. What field they choose is up to them, but they will indefinably succeed in it.
The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, esp. when considered as an academic discipline.
